The book, Daily Life in Papal Rome in the Eighteenth Century, by Maurice Andrieux is an enlightening piece of work that describes how the Romans lived; how they thought about life; and how the leadership of the Popes ruled and the different personalities toward the Church. The information and descriptions about the Popes were quite interesting. The author describes the day-to-day life with vivid details of the people and the scenery. It also examines the lives of the Popes during the eighteenth century in a most realistic way. The author, Andrieux describes the Pope's strengths and weakness in a very colorful manner. One truly gets a realistic feeling of what it was like to live in Papal Rome. In a very unbiased way, the author showed how the people of Rome lived during the Eighteenth Century. In summarizing the book, Eighteenth-century Rome was a beautiful place to live, in which time has seemed to have past by. It was like living in the past and enjoying the special things that Rome had to offer her people. There was always some kind of carnival or festival happening, celebrating some Roman Saint or Roman holiday of some sort. If, one wanted to join in and parade around with friends and talk about gossip, which Romans loved to do, it was there for them. At a time when the rest of Europe was stirred by social ideas and radical reforms that were soon to erupt in revolution in some parts of Europe. Rome's people clung faithfully to a golden view of life. Her Pope, during this time, had never been so liberal. Her religion had never been so accommodating, for although it imposed rigorous rules to live by, it permitted every form of compromise with heaven. A very good example of this ideal is quoted by the author, Andrieux as saying "Do as you please, but tell us about it afterwards"(118). Forgiven by confession and full of confidence, the Roman citizens gave themselves completely to worldly pleasures and were not taken back by conscience.
