I Am Sam

For people who have disabilities it has become known to me over the past years how people can take advantage of them and do. From the movie clips I have seen from classes to actually hearing people who have disabilities talk, many times people take advantage of them and then blame it all on the person with the disability. At the very beginning of I Am Sam you see Sam (the main character). Sam is mentally disabled; his mental capacity is of a 7 year old. Sam is in the hospital with a woman who is giving birth; you come to find out the child is Sam's. Who Sam got this woman pregnant was because this woman needed a place to stay one night used Sam for him home and slept with him. As they are walking out of the hospital she runs off and leaves Sam and the little girl. He is left confused and with a little baby girl all by himself.

When Sam first took the little girl home, (Lucy) you could really tell how hard he was trying to make things right for her. Having a mind of a 7 year old there are things he did not know what to do. In actuality though, there are so many parents in this country who bring a child home and do not really know how to care for it correctly. For Sam to make it he kept

While Lucy was with the foster parents she would sneak out every night to go be with her dad. When she got to his house, he would always explain to her why she couldn't stay with him and take her home. While this was all going on the foster care mother was getting upset with Sam and did not really understand Lucy. She just wanted Lucy to love her and be happy.

You could tell Rita did not give Sam a chance from the very beginning. But it really opened her eyes when she got to know him as a person. He saw her life and understood what was going on with her and her son. Sam would make comments to her about it and would open her eyes to him understanding. Sam knew her son was only acting up because he wanted attention from his mother. At the beginning of the movie I really do not think Rita thought it was good of Sam to be able to take care of his daughter. Once she got to know him and gave him a chance you could see her mind changed and saw he was and could be a good father.

Sam is very persistent on getting Rita to go through with what she said. He kept going to her office and asking her when she was going to help. Then one day he went to her office and asked her about helping. He made somewhat of a scene and other people in the office made comments about how she would never help him. She heard these comments and told Sam of course she was going to help him, making him seem like he misunderstood her from before. So from this point she is helping him probono.

Then after a while the foster care mother began to realize how the love between Lucy and her father would get them through anything. And that Lucy would only really be happy if she was with her father. So when it came time to go to court again the foster care mother took Sam's side in the matter. I think this revelation happened because she looked at Sam at a person, not just his disability. She saw the love he had for his daughter was real. Also with Sam having the support system he needed Lucy would be just fine.

The turning point in the movie was when his daughter turned seven years old she drew a picture which showed her taking care of her father. The school became concerned with the picture and wanted to take action. After Sam found out about this he did not really understand why they would take Lucy always from him because he loved her. So Sam wanted to take legal ac
