School Reform
This paper examined the problems in the current school reform movement, and shows what the government has done over the past twenty years to improve our school system. With the research gathered from numerous academic articles, this paper shows the positive and negative to current reform methods such as testing and accountability. It examines as the nine bills that Bill Clinton passed in 1993 and 1994. The paper discusses what is being done in the presently and what President Bush plans to do for the future of the United States Educational System. School reform is a major issue in today's society, and this paper provides factual information that will create a better educational system in the future.School Reform: Are We a Nation Still at Risk? In 1983 the National Commission on Excellence in education released a document that changed school reform drastically from that year to the present. "A Nation at Risk" report shows how the learning skills of students in the United States have declined since the 1960s. Even so the government has made some progress towards raising the performance level of the students. For the first time "testing" and " accountability" have become familiar
"waves," that were intended to correct the poor skills of U.S. over a period of several years. (5) A new commitment to high standards and excellence with the passage of the Goals 2000 Act, this extraordinary act is centered on state academic standards of excellence, and gives all communities some help to reach for these standards by encouraging and supporting their design of their own action plan. (9) Finally, we can recognize that the burden of paying for a good college tuition can be overwhelming. College tuition has been on the rise and, at the same time, people need to get their education. We have created a new direct-lending program that will give many more of you the opportunity to pay back what you can afford when you get out of college (Riley, 1994, pp.5-6). The government has released many programs following the 1983 "A Nation at Risk" report. The programs that began the current school reform movement came in a series of All of the aforementioned are a very good beginning towards bettering our education standards. However, these concepts are only the foreground to the second wave of education reform. (8) One of the most exciting things we have done is to pass a school-to-work initiative that connects what young people are learning to the world of work. We want to jump start young people into thinking about their careers, into entering very demanding apprenticeships, into getting a focus on real life.
