Suicide

Suicides among young people nationwide have increased dramatically in recent years. Suicide is the sixth leading cause of death for five to fourteen year olds, and the third leading cause of death for fifteen to twenty four year olds. One teenager every one hundred minutes takes their life, and for every life taken, there are fifty to one hundred attempts of suicide.

Teenage suicide is a growing problem in society and there are signs to look for if a person is considering committing suicide. Most teenagers who are considering suicide are having problems in their life, which leads to depression, and sometimes suicide. During adolescence teenagers deal with a lot of new experiences such as physical changes, new relationships, and decisions about the future. This new pressure can lead to depression. For some teenagers divorce, the formation of a new family with step-parents and step-siblings, or moving to a new community can be very unsettling and can intensify self-doubts. In some of these cases the solution may be suicide. Some other reasons teenagers might be considering suicide is an unplanned pregnancy, substance abuse, family loss or significant problems with parents, or parents with alcohol and drug problems. These problems


Impulsive, aggressive behavior and frequent expressions of rage, are also a sign that a teenager may be considering suicide. An adolescence may give verbal hints that suicide is there solution like "I want to kill myself", " I won't be a problem for you much longer", or "nothing matters", and " I won't see you again".

The signs or signals that the teenager may give can be showing signs of hopelessness, changes in weight, changes in sleep behavior, making negative opinions about theories, talking or writing about suicide, giving away possessions, or sudden interest in life insurance or making a will.

There are many places to get help for a suicidal teenager. There are doctors, counsellors, psychologists, social workers, and the suicidal department in hospitals. There are also Suicide prevention programs now that will help suicidal teenagers. Different prevention strategies are designed to prevent suicide in various ways. For example, Gatekeeper training and screening programs are designed to identify people at risk of suicide and refer them to a mental health services, while hotlines, (which are in every phonebook) are intended to help teenagers who are experiencing a crisis. Although prevention programs are typically comprehensive, many program directors recommend implementing one component at a time, in order to get the activity fully operational before new program components are added.
