Great Patriotic War

Assess the reasons for the success of the Soviet Union in the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945. Concepts that should be considered include Industrialization, modernization and nationalism.

Many contributing factors led the success of the Soviet Union in the Great Patriotic War between 1941 to 1945. A primary reason for this triumph was the nationalistic determination of the people under Stalin's leadership. The USSR's centralized industrialization and rapid mobilization held a key role in Soviet victory and was a secondary factor to Soviet success. It was the battle of Stalingrad that demonstrated the strength of the Soviet Union as it was to signal the turning point of the war for Russia.

The mobilization of the Soviet economy, which resulted after Stalin's speech to the nation on 3 July 1941, was a secondary factor leading to the success of the Great Patriotic War, between Russia and Germany. Industrialization, which had taken place prior to then, provided a substantial industrial base. Due to this previous preparation, the command economy and the Stalinist system enabled the USSR to mobilize quickly and efficiently under the co-ordination of the State Defense committee (GKO) in response to the war. Away from conflict,

Despite all their terrible privation and suffering the willingness of the soviet people to suffer for the nation was a major factor in the eventual Soviet victory. The determination of the Russian people was best displayed in the 900-day siege of Leningrad. German forces had driven deeply into Russian, reaching Leningrad in September 1941, with little resistance. Yet a siege mounted that lasted for some 900 days. Immense suffering existed among the Leningrad population, as food was scarce, disease spread, as well as constant harassment from German forces. Somewhere near a million citizens died in the siege. The Leningrad people were inspirational to fellow Soviets. Gill argued the commitment and sacrifices of the people played a critical part role in the soviet Victory. The determination of the women helped lead to such success as they replaced men who were drafted to the armies. Women even persuade combat role in the airforce such as the 'Night witches'. Therefore the determination of the Soviet people was a major factor to Soviet success as they were the providers for the war effort, without their determination and nationalization; the Soviet Union would have been defeated.

The Soviet triumph of the Great Patriotic War from 1941 to 1945 was due to numerous reasons. The key explanations for this success are due to Stalin's ability as a leader. Under Stalin's direction, the Soviet Union saw significant improvement in industrialization, due to the modernization of the county. Through propaganda, and motivational speech Stalin was able to create a nationalistic population, illustrated by the determination of the Leningrad people in the 900-day siege. The battle of Stalingrad was an example of the combination of these factors; industrialization, modernization and nationalism; the Soviet was able to attain a triumphant victory.
