Lord of the Flies by William Golding- Book Review

LORD OF THE FLIES - by William Golding

This novel took place in the early 1900's, on a deserted island. A group of boys were stranded on this island by the result of a plane crash. With no adults on the island, they had to survive and wait for someone to rescue them.

The characters of this story include Ralph, Piggy, Jack Merridew, Simon, Sam and Eric, Roger, Maurice, Percival, Phil, Bill, Henry and Wilfred, but the main characters are Ralph, Piggy and Jack. The children do very little work to help the group. Mostly, the children eat, bathe and hunt. Ralph, the appointed chief is utterly disappointed with the children. They can't even keep a signal fire going, which dissolves any chance for rescue.

Ralph and Piggy discover a shell. Piggy recognizes it as a 'conch' and knows that if they blow into it, it will make a trumpet-like sound. Ralph blows into it to gather the boys. The boys gather around him from all directions and appoint Ralph the "chief". The conch then becomes the symbol of order in the boys' meetings. During the meetings, you had to be holding it to be able to speak.

Jack does not like Ralph as the "chief" because he makes too many rules. He challenges Ralph, and creates a tribe of his own. The child
