Throughout Things Fall Apart the main focus of the story was Okonkwo, a man with a tremendous amount of power. By allowing Okonkwo to over power Things Fall Apart the narrator enables readers to take their attention off other characters that also have great weight on the story. As a child Okonkwo grew up with a male figure who shows him what a man is not to be. Unoka, Okonkwo's father was a man that only thought of today and never of tomorrow. He was an indolent and very heedless. He spent his life borrowing from people of the village and never repaying them back. "When Unoka Died he had taken no title at all and he was heavily in debt. Ezinma was the daughter of Okonkwo's second wife. She was only one of Ekwefi ten children to survive. Okonkwo is very fond of Ezinma, but rarely shows it. "Okonkwo was specially fond of Ezinma. She looked very much like of her mother, who was once the village beauty. But his fondness only showed on very rare occasions."(44). Okonkwo some times wishes that Ezinma were a boy. While in exile Okonkwo asks Ezinma to wait to get married until they're returned to Umuofia. Knowing that she and her sister were a key part to his rise again in Umuofia. "With two beautiful grown-up daughters his return to Umuofia would attract considerable attention. His future sons-in-law would be men of authority in the clan"(173). Ezinma agrees and convinces her sister Obiageli to also wait to get married. Ezinma has a greater influence over Obiageli than Okonkwo. ""Your half-sister, Obiageli, will not understand me," Okonkwo said. "But you can explain to her""(173).

"Answer me," roared Okonkwo, "before I kill you!" He seized a heavy stick that lay on the dwarf wall and hit two or three savage blows.

The next day the elders for all nine villages of Umuofia, Okonkwo, and Ikemefuna headed to the forest. They kill Ikemefuna when they are deep in the forest. Right before Ikemefuna death Okonkwo hears him cry out:

Okonkwo oldest son Nwoye causes Okonkwo much grief. Okonkwo feels that Nwoye shows many treats like his father. Which causes Okonkwo to constantly fuss and beat Nwoye. Okonkwo states:

"Do you think you are cutting up yams for cooking?" he asked Nwoye. "If you split another yam of this size, I shall break your jaw. You think you are sti1ll a child. I began to own a farm at your age"(32).

Okonkwo love for Nwoye causes him to want what he feels is the best thing for Nwoye. His love for Nwoye gives Nwoye great power over his father without either of them knowing
