Music: Since The Beginning

"Rhythm and harmony find their way into the inward places of the soul."... Plato. Greek philosopher. He wrote that before modern music, before experimentation with different musical genres. I'm here today to convince you that music stirs and evokes inside of us powerful emotions, and therefore shapes history.

Music evokes pleasurable limbic states, which result in emotional responses, the brain having its emotional systems triggered off by pleasurable sounds. That's the physical reason. Think back to a time when you heard a tune that changed how you feel, expressed what you couldn't. As long as you can remember that, then I don't have to persuade you that this is true. You've already done that yourself.

Throughout history, music has been used as a platform to express political and social statements, and music censorship has been used to cease these statements, in fear that the populace might respond to these statements in rebellion. In 1607, Renaissance composer Claudio Monteverdi wrote the opera Orfeo, o
