The facts are out there. Children and adolescents are affected by the violence they are exposed to, and they are watching television violence in increasing numbers each year. According to ACNielsen's market research, the average child watches 25 hours of television each week, which means he will have spent 7 to 10 years in front of the television by the time he reaches 70. Young people in the United States spend more time watching television when not in school than any other activity except for sleeping, and they view approximately 10,000 violent acts each year. To make matters worse, thousands of studies show that there is a definite link between exposure to violence on television and aggressive behavior. Children who watch these television programs tend to think that violence and hostility are acceptable ways to solve problems because they do not understand the reality of violence.

This effect that TV violence has on our nation's children is a problem we must tackle swiftly and cleverly


Of course, there are those families with working parents who are not able to supervise their children 24 hours a day. In these cases, there are a multitude of helpful electronic solutions, such as the V-Chip and various other television filters, which can assist in supervising children when their parents are unable to be with them. For the times when children will be in other peoples' homes, the parents must simply inform an adult of the house that their children are not permitted to watch violent television programs. It is also helpful to discuss this matter with the children beforehand, because children obviously cannot be watched over all of the time and the child should know what is expected of him.

Monitoring and restricting public television programs is not only unpopular, but it is radical and unnecessary.
