A Farewell to Arms
Have you ever loved someone and then lost them? Ernest Hemingway shows us a novel with a war background and a love between two people that eventually end. The author's work in the novel helps provide the literary critique. Since the time period is between to major wars there is plenty of information to help provide the history and background for the novel. Through the author's personal life a best seller was born.Ernest Hemingway joined the Italian army as an ambulance driver during World War I. This led to the great detail of the war scenes. A shell shrieked over and exploded. It scattered shrapnel in all directions and threw Hemingway causing shrapnel to get into his legs. He carried a solider over his shoulder as he looked for medical help. At the hospital, he met Agnes a nurse. They eventually fell in love with each other. This gave him the idea for A Farewell to Arms. She ended up transferring to another hospital and they wrote for a while. Eventually he went home leaving behind his love. He received a letter from her saying she had fallen in love with another officer. This signifently hurt him giving him this quote from A Farewell to Arms. "You did not know what it was about. You never had time to learn.
They threw you in and told you the rules and the first time they caught you off base and killed you...They killed you in the end. You could count on that. Stay around and they would kill you" (Berridge 24). His life in the army lead to one of his bestsellers. A few people in the book are flat characters. The priest is a christlike figure who hangs round the officers. He is teased by the other officers by remains calm through it all. His character at no time gets severely detailed. He provides not only the officer's moral wisdom but the book to. Rinaldi is Frederick's roommate in the army and a great surgeon. Rinaldi claims Fredrick as own brother. Ferguson is Catherine's friend and works at the hospital with her. She protects Catherine from everyone and everything. She is the spokeswoman for conformity and conventional life (Berridge 15). Ernest Hemingway is synonymous with "American writer." His books made it to the best seller lists on numerous occasions. He rewrote the ending to the book thirty-nine times. This shows that Hemingway is dedicated to getting his book perfect. A Farewell to Arms headed him in the right direction when it came to writing novels. Hemingway brought a style that no one else could copy. It was original and unique. Hemingway was not afraid to write about a war that happened. He opened the way for other writers in that time period. The Italian used in the novel gave the book a cultural significance. They would give up everything just to be in the arms of each other. They never have to worry about being lonely because they get closer to each other as they are alone. They are always calling each other brave, lovely, and splendid as they compliment each other all the time.
