Tuesdays with Morrie, comparis
"Comparing a novel and a film is about as useful as comparing a dog and a cat... They are entirely different beasts". There are many similar techniques, which are exploited by both mediums for example the use of emotive, and descriptive language. Also there are many techniques, which can be only by one of the mediums, such as soundtrack, and music. These limitations make it very difficult for comparisons between the same texts, placed in different mediums. An example of this occurrence is the novel and film Tuesdays with Morrie; it is extremely complicated to compare the two mediums thoroughly.Film and novel have basically the same structure, a beginning, a climax, and an end or resolution. However throughout the duration of the text different techniques can be applied in film, which cannot be applied in a novel medium. For example in the film Tuesdays with Morrie the director manages to exploit the visual techniques to his advantage when Morrie finds out that he is suffering from ALS, his facial expressions completely change, and the colour tone also becomes more vibrant which deepens the affect on the responder. Before this discovery the audience had only seen a very 'happy' Morrie, however we actually see a progression from
Descriptive language, or emotive word choice are both examples of language techniques which are very difficult to 'translate' into the film medium. For example in the beginning of the novel Tuesdays with Morrie, the composer uses descriptive language to describe the setting of the novel, and also to foreshadow what will happen. However in film it is only possible to do this to a certain extent, as it would defeat the purpose of the film medium to have a narrative film. Although film and novel are very similar structurally, they both do have their limitations, and also possibilities. Film has the ability to use such things as lighting, sound, and music to its advantage over novels, which obviously cannot use these devices. However novel on the other hand has other possibilities which film does not have; the ability to use descriptive language, emotive word choice, and other such techniques. Also when translated into the film medium, the text loses many small details which can ultimately affect the quality of the film. one stage of his life to another. In the novel this cannot be fully achieved, the composer can only describe to the responder what happened, and attempt to depict how Morrie reacts. This is an enormous limita
