Physical, Psychosocial & Cognitive Development of 0-3
There are many developmental achievements that will occur in areas of physical, psychosocial and cognitive throughout the first three years. Normal developmental milestones nearly always occur in the same order but at different ages for different children. Caregivers are also teachers and must help cultivate their development and learning experiences through developmentally appropriate activities. There are no years more important then these first three years of life and it is of great importance that infants and toddlers get environmental stimulation through physical, motor, psychosocial, cognitive, language and literacy experiences. In the first 12 months of life, an infant's size increases by approximately 50 percent and "In no other one year period until puberty are there so many physical changes.' . There are many milestones in the infant's physical and motor development and their motor development will move from gross to fine in two distinct patterns. The cephalocaudal pattern is where motor control of the head to arms is achieved first then to trunk and legs. The proxmidodestal pattern is where command of head to the trunk is achieved first, followed by arms to the fingers and feet. Newborns respond physically t
Infants at 10 month's of age are learning to voluntarily release objects in their hands. To help them develop this skill you will need some foam blocks and a large container. Select and clear an area that can be constantly supervised and place the container in the middle of the area, scattering the blocks around the container. Allow the infant to explore the blocks and suggest that they "Put the blocks into the container." reinforcing by demonstrating. Provide positive encouragement for attempts as well as accomplishments. To help some infants to release the block from their hand you may need to assist by placing your hand underneath the block or suggesting the infant place the block at the bottom of the container. This will help them to practice releasing objects as a firm surface usually stimulates infants to open their hands. After 2 months infants seem as they are getting nosier every day as their interest in their sound increase. At four months infants begin to experiment with more and more sounds and can distinguish emotions in an adult's voice by their tone. During the fifth month babies develop auditory orientating response, where they respond to abrupt and loud nearby noise. True language learning begins around the six month, where there is understanding of the meaning of the words. At this time echolalia develops and by the end of eight months you can expect they understand the meaning of their first words be it 'mama', 'dada' or 'baba.' A one year old will understand about 6 words and simple instructions. Cognitively before an infant reaches 7 months they will be exploring the principle of cause and effect and then will begin to make understanding of object permanence and as they grow older their observations will give them a even greater understanding. Infants begin to imitate what they see and thus they will start to use objects for their correct function.
