Aboriginal Historical Culture
" What were some of the important links between Aboriginal culture and the natural environment before Europeans settled in Australia?" In order to answer the question it is necessary to be clear of the concepts that are to be investigated, culture, natural and the environment. So what is your understanding of the terms, culture, environment and natural? Natural according to the "Concise Oxford Dictionary" among other things states it as being: existing in or by nature, not artificial, inane, inherent, self-sown, uncultivated. According to the google online sociology dictionary culture is defined as: Objects made by people as they interact with one another and the physical world and The products of collective human activity that have no physical reality, including symbols, language, music, beliefs, values, norms, and attitudes. Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary & Thesaurus describes the environment as: the complex of physical, chemical, and biotic factors (as climate, soil, and living things) that act upon an organism or an ecological community and ultimately determine its form and survival b: the aggregate of social and cultural conditions that influence the life of an individual or community.
Traditional land management practices such as burning and hunting have altered the composition of Australian flora and fauna considerably. Each individual had a unique relationship to every other person through a set of kinship relationships, predicted through elaborate marriage rules which were strictly enforced. These rules were said to be laid down at the time of creation. Each clan used a small core estate containing Dreaming sites sacred to them which they protected and cared for. Many monuments remain to the complex management of reliable food sources. The clan foraged over a much larger range, which overlapped the estates of other descent groups to which it was connected through ties of marriage and language. Land was considered inalienable and not a commodity to be bought and sold.
