Have you ever wondered why characters who seemed so selfless at first are the

first to rise once the something falls? It's almost as if they saw it coming and stayed to the

side to look good. Well, Sophocles, Shakespeare, and Ibsen, all used the convention rise

from a downfall in their writings. Characters such as Peter Stockmann, Thomas

Stockmann, Creon, Julius Caesar, Antony, and Brutus, as portrayed in An Enemy Of The

People, Julius Caesar, and Antigony, all have risen at the expense of another character or

Peter Stockmann in An Enemy of The People, is the mayor. He is an educated

man who looks to take care of the town and his reputation. He gets introduced as a man

who is not a fan of having fun. He is very strict and to the point. When the information of

the contaminated baths leaks out he panics and becomes very weary of loosing his good

Reputation. He sneakily turns the story around, to make himself look like the good guy,

all though he was the one originally responsible for the contamination. He becomes adored by every one and his brother, a nobody. He makes his brother out to be a liar.

Thomas Stockmann is another character in An Enemy of the People. He is Peter's

very fun loving, and enjoys being accompanied by "bright, cheerful, freedom-loving, hard working young men". He is just one of "the guys" until he realizes that the baths are contaminated. The more he learns of this devastating news, the more his head swells. He keeps it very quiet, until he starts to fight for the ability to spread his news. He no longer cares for the good of the community; all he cares about is being recognized, and bringing down the reputation of his brother. So as the good of the community fell, Peter Stockmann rose.

It is interesting that three playwrights, from three different times, and three different places all used the same idea, Rise at the expense of another. All of the character are torn apart because of there hunger for power.

Brutus was an honorable man who rose at the fall of Caesar. He killed Caesar. He was originally Caesar's friend but was tricked into the conspiracy by Cassius. Brutus seemed very selfless at first but once he gained power he became obnoxious, and forgot the original plan. He no longer did it to please the community; he did it to be honored even more. He gained lots of power until his honor ruined him and Antony took over.
