Our organization, a construction firm "From the Ground Up" utilizes a highly skilled executive team to create a vision founded on the American dream of home ownership. The ability to organize and run a multi-faceted construction company remains challenging yet exciting to all our employees and customers with our shared commitment to excellence. In this article we shall discuss our organizations leadership structure and the value each management team brings together in our quest to be the industry leader as a development corporation. To lead is to influence others to come together as one to accomplish a common goal. Leadership is an easy concept to define but a difficult one to study and understand. (Dessler 2001) To be a leader an individual must think like a leader, understand what it is to be a leader, provide a vision for his followers, and last but not least, act like a leader. Merit pay, or merit raises, are awarded to employees who consistently perform at above average levels of expertise. Employees who attend classes or seminars to further their knowledge are awarded with such raises. Finally, we have begun to offer generous benefit packages and stock options to our employees. We believe that our employees will be more likely to add to the success of the company if they have some actual ownership of it. By using this method, and those described above, we have been successful in building long-term relations with our employees. Abraham Maslow's needs hierarchy theory describes five levels of human needs. In an essence, there are certain needs that must be attained first before the higher needs can be reached. The five needs described here are: Physiological, security, social, self-esteem, and self-actualization (Dessler, 2001, p.322). We believe that all five needs need to be met for our employees to continue to perform at high levels of expertise, and to encourage long-term relations with our employees. The first we addressed were the physiological needs such as food, drink, sleep, and good health. Since the majority of our employees will be working outside we provide water for them. They have one-hour lunches, broken in to two shifts, around noon. This way everyone gets a lunch, and the work continues throughout the day.
