"Trading your Kingdom for a Horse." The previous passage is a line from Shakespeare's, Richard III. When the king is stranded on the battle field he calls out; 'My Kingdom, my kingdom for a horse'. The king realizes that his wealth and power do him no good in his situation. He would gladly give it all up for a practical means of survival, in this case a horse.

In the late 70's and early 80's businesses realized that they needed to make a change. They needed to find a way to serve their markets more quickly, with higher quality products, and at lower costs. The large corporations were the first to realize that a change was imminent, hospitals were next and schools are now the front runners to make the change. Schools are beginning to be managed by private companies. These companies are planning new beginnings with teachers, parents, and local businesses.

The changes are an outcome of economic times. Businesses, including government, health care, and schooling are getting smaller, and are having to provide more with less. Stewardship gives control and accountability back to the workers. It is very difficult for people to give up control of something they care about. In order for stewardship to work it must instill the senses of ownership and responsibility at every level.

Empowerment is the belief that any problems arising will be solved by all.

Partnership is intended to balance power between ourselves and those around us. It questions the uses of consistency and control as the cornerstone of management. It allows you to choose to place control where the work is done, not at the upper management levels.

Everyone agrees that when an organization starts to fail a change is needed. "Stewardship is the set of principles and practices which have the potential to make dramatic changes in our governance system." It is designed to create a sense of ownership and responsibility from the bottom of the organization all the way to the top. It is a reform that puts the leadership back where it should be, with the doers. In order for it to work service must be chosen over self interest. It requires a trust in the workers that we are not accustomed to.
