The Choosen

A detailed Summary of The Choosen

The Chosen, a novel written by Chaim Potok, revolves mainly around the lives of four people. They include Reuven Malter, Mr. Malter, Reb Saunders and Danny Saunders. It mainly details the friendship between Reuven Malter and Danny Saunders and not as much around their fathers, Mr. Malter and Reb Saunders. Because the story revolves around the friendship of Reuven and Danny, I will focus on Reuven.

The story takes place in Brooklyn around the time of World War II. Reuven Malter lives with his father in an apartment in Brooklyn. They live in a Hasidic and Orthodox area, with some Irish, German, and Spanish families. Most of the buildings around were three or four story brownstones. According to the book, only a few stores in the area were owned by Orthodox Jews. The rest were run by gentiles.

Reuven lives in a world that is just out of the depression and World War II, and we, up until September eleventh, lived in a world which was different than his world. We were in a peaceful and prosperous time, while Reuven was in a world where the economy was only beginning to recover and the war was only just ending. Now we are at a time where our economy is not booming and we are gearing up for war.

I think that there is more than just one theme to the story. I think that the most important theme would have to be that friendships can come from the weirdest circumstances and survive the toughest ordeals. The book shows this in the friendship between Danny and Reuven. Their friendship starts because of a softball match in which Reuven is injured, and it survives such things as Danny's being forbidden to speak to Reuven. Reb Saunders forbids Danny to speak to Reuven because Reuven's father is an outspoken advocate of the Zionist movement and Reb Saunders is against it. Another theme that the story presents is the importance and influence of family. Both Danny and Reuven have a deep respect for their fathers, especially Danny, who has a passion for philosophy. He goes against his father's wishes when he signs up for philosophy classes in College (this happens in book three) but he is still concerned with what his father thinks (because his father wants Danny to take his position, not study philosophy).

Reuven meets and befriends Danny Saunders in a chain of events which begins one day while they are playing in a softball match. One of Reuven's teammates, Davey Cantor, told Reuven about Danny's team and how they were a really good team. Reuven found out just how good they were when his team was beaten eight to seven
