Suspicious about Altruism?

Normal people are inherently selfish, even when they seem to be acting very altruistically. Most people tend to prove my contention that egoism is prevalent as they frequently behave in an obviously selfish manner, a behavior that is generally not a bad thing for society as a whole. However, I believe that people who hurt others by lying, cheating, or stealing to finagle their way to the top are usually not justified in their means. Although they may receive short-term rewards, I feel they are not ultimately seeking what's best for their own best long-term interests. In addition to discussing the above statements, this paper will argue that even those "innocents" who seemingly seek to live in non-competitive, socialistic groups or perform good deeds often have their own ulterior selfish reasons for doing so.

It is a logical strategy for one to always take care of oneself first since nobody else is better equipped to do so. Once personal needs have been met, an individual will be in a superior position to spread goodwill and help others who are less able to help themselves. This kind of behavior can be viewed out of context as a selfish action because it enables an individual to thrive and feel good about himself. The fringe benefits to friends and associates typically come slowly afterward and may not be apparent to the casual observer who isn't privy to the way success trickles down to others.
