Halfway through 3rd term Yr.12, everyone in my position should be overwhelmed by decisions. 'What university course do I want to do?' 'What career will I choose?' 'When will I move out of home?' 'How much homework will I do tonight?'
School encourages us to ask ourselves these questions' as do our parents. However, although these are important questions for some, most people overlook the factor that will have the largest effect on our lives. The culture/society we live in. Are we really content with the society we live in and the culture we live by?
From birth we are thrown into this society without any choice on the matter, much the same as we cannot choose our parents. The difference is that we can change where we live. Everyone at some stage should ask themselves 'If I could have chosen the culture into which I was born, knowing all the alternatives, would I be here?'
ans the answer would be 'yes'. We live in a prosperous and respected country, most people who live here are comfortable. However, there are people who would be happier in a different society for reasons such as; the government and its policies, a loss in faith of the system of government, a lack of interest for this culture, or even a feeling of ' I've done this, now I'll try something different'.
There is a place in the world for everyone and it is not necessarily the place we are born and accustomed to. It is a real possibility that for some people fear of change, cultivated by society, gets in the way of a truly fulfilling life. It is important for people that are about to make the transition of being a student to entering adult life and fixing themselves to careers and goals and families to ask themselves 'Is this where I want to be, above all other places?"
