Grapes of Wrath

"To love your family is to know a love with no limits." (Wilson Figueroa) Family love is a love that no one else can ever share. It is a special bond between the members of a family and special friends of the family that stays inseparable throughout life. This bond cannot be broken under any circumstances. This is the kind of love that Ma Joad has for her family. She struggles to maintain the family bond of the Joads, for her family is prioritized first above any others. Her love for her family is so great, that she would go through any adversary to preserve her family bond. In The Grapes of Wrath , Steinbeck suggests that people lacking the essential bond of family unity will not survive. Tom, you got to get away."' Ma decides what would be in the best interest of the family, and for the safety of the family, she comes to the conclusion that Tom must leave, in case anyone looks for him. Even though Ma Joad opposes Tom leaving, she does what is best for the family. She gives him seven dollars and sends him on his way. This shows her ability to think rationally under extreme circumstances for the safety of the Joads.

Crossing the checkpoint to California, Ma Joad maintains her self composer to allow the family to pass through without being stopped. Granma dies, and Ma tells the family that "'...we couldn't he'p her. The fambly had ta get acrost."' Ma does everything possible no matter the sacrifice to help her family. Ma lies to the officer and says that a doctor is urgent so the family could cro
