A detailed Summary of Wireless Networking

Wireless networking is a quickly growing trend in the technology field. But unlike most trends in this business, wireless is here to stay. Businesses and individuals alike enjoy the speed and convenience of wireless networking. There are no wires to deal with, making the desk and floor space around the area less cluttered. For these reasons and more that I'll discuss here wireless networking is not going to go away like some technologies of the past.

Lets start off by taking a few minutes to talk about networking in general, what it is and how it works.

Networking is taking one or more computers and/or printers and connecting them in such a way that they can communicate with each other and share information. This is done either by connecting all computers together so that they communicate with every other computer on the network, or by connecting all of them to a centralized server. The server stores all information for the network so that when a user request a file he/she just looks on the server and doesn't have to know which computer the file is located on.

Just like anything else in this field wireless does have its disadvantages. It is expensive, though the price is dropping steadily every day. You can expect to spend around $100.00 for the wireless network cards for each computer, $150.00 for each wireless router and another $175.00 for a WAP. Wireless networks can be difficult to set up. It can take an experienced technician many hours to get a wireless network set up and running. And depending on the conditions around the network speed can fluctuate wildly. It can be affected by anything from lightning to a radio being nearby.

The most common way you are going to see networks set up in the office is in what we call a client/server environment. In this case the wireless adapter inside each individual node transmits its data to a WAP. This stands for Wireless Access Point. The WAP is a wired controller that is tied to your server and it sends and receives all data from the wireless adapters. It is the middle-man in our little chain. It links the nodes to the server. You will rarely if ever see wireless used in a workgroup. The cost is too expensive for companies of that size.
