Ultimately, we need to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. On an individual level, contacting authorities that are in charge of these fossil fuels is what the author suggests. The Kyoto Protocol was "watered down" into a weaker version in a conference in Bonn, Germany this past year. The good thing is that all nations with the exception of the United States support the new treaty. Japan, however, has yet to sign the Protocol, even though it originally had intentions to do so. Perhaps this is due to pressure from the United States. If signed, the weakened Protocol could go in effect sometime this next year. Greenpeace is asking the reader to send a letter to the prime minister of Japan, urging a signature to put the internati

onal law into effect. Greenpeace is also asking the reader to send letters to one or all of the top five oil companies, urging them to change their views on Kyoto. Chevron, Conoco, Exxon/Mobil and Texaco currently do not support Kyoto, and Phillips has made no decision on whether to support such a treaty. These five company's heavily supported Bush's presidential campaign. Greenpeace also suggests sending a letter to Ford Motor Company to a) support the Kyoto Protocol and b) finance alternative ways of fueling automobiles. Automobiles, as a whole, are a great contributor of emitting CO2 emissions.
