Yitzhak Rabin - An Israeli Hero
A detailed Summary of Yitzhak Rabin - An Israeli Hero
In his life and in his death Yitzhak Rabin was hero. He showed courage and devotion towards the state of Israel and its people. He took a stand against violence, and tried to unite people in peace. His entire life was dedicated to establishing peace. He started as a gruff soldier, and somehow transferred into the dove he used to scorn (Clyde Haberman, A101). "We should not let the land flowing with milk and honey, become the land flowing with blood and tears," (Yitzhak Rabin)
Rabin was born in Jerusalem on March 1 1922. His father, Nehemieh had immigrated to Israel from the United States and in World War 1 served as a volunteer in the Jewish Legion. His mother, Rosa, was one of the first members of the Haganah. Rabin completed grade school in Tel-Aviv, and then attended the Kedoorie Agricultual college, in lower Galilee. After completing school, he volunteered for the Palmach, where he began his military career. The Palmach is a secret commando unit of the Haganah, the major underground Jewish militia. He served in the Palmach and the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) for 27 years. In 1949 he became a member of the Isreli delegation for the first negotiations with Egypt. In 1962 he was appointed Chief of the General Staff, and was soo

On October 26, 1994, on the Israel-Jordan border, he signed the Treaty of Peace between the State of Israel and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in December 1994, along with Foreign Minister Shimon Peres and PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat. On September 28, 1995, he was a signatory to the Israeli-Palestinian Interim Agreement on the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.
His leadership brought forth many landmarks in the peace process (Robert O Freedman,4). On September 13, 1993, at the signing of the Isreli Palestinian Declaration of Principles on the White House lawn, Prime Minister Rabin shook hands with PLO chairman Yasser Arafat.
Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated on November 4th 1995 while attending a peace rally in Tel Aviv. He was leading the rally under the slogan "Yes to Peace, no to Violence." It was quite ironic that he was shot twice that day. He was assassinated by a jewish right-wing extremist. The confessed assassin, Yigal Amir, had no regrets (CNN Nov. 6, 1996). He stated that he killed Rabin because Rabin wanted "to give out country to the Arabs (Yigal Amir)." Yitzak Rabin left his wife Leah, his daughter Dalia, his son Yucal, and three grandchildren. The funeral took place on Monday, November 6th. The dozens of Arab leaders preasent at his funeral proved how radically Rabin helped change the ways of the Middle East ( CNN Nov 6,1996) They put all their differences with Israel aside, and
