To most people the issue of euthanasia is a matter of right from wrong. Those people who disagree with the practice of euthanasia base have created their opinions from a religious viewpoint. These people do not realize that the issue of euthanasia is strictly about the freedom to choose. Through understanding, the two different forms of euthanasia, morality of the issue, the religious viewpoint on euthanasia, viewpoint of the people who are against euthanasia, and the pain and suffering that euthanasia erases, it is obvious that euthanasia needs to be legalized to ensure the freedom of the American people. Euthanasia is typically broken into two categories active euthanasia, and passive euthanasia. "Active euthanasia is the act of administering a lethal drug, or using other means that cause a persons death" (MacKinnon, 126). "Passive euthanasia is Stopping (or not starting) some treatment, which allows a person to die, the persons condition causes his or her death," (MacKinnon, 126). Active euthanasia is usually the more debated of the two acts of euthanasia and is better known because of the actions of Dr. Jack Kevorkian, who has aided in many successful suicides. Supporters of euthanasia view it in a very different way. "We believe that everyone has the right to choose how they live and die" (TVES). Euthanasia allows the person to keep their dignity by ending his or her own life. This lets the person die in peace, instead of dying in pain. It eliminates their view of dying to be a burden, physically and financially. "Each person has value and is worthy of respect, has basic rights and freedoms and the power to control his or her destiny. Our campaign to legalize assisted dying within certain strictly defined circumstances is fundamentally about choice" (TVES). Euthanasia is one of the most commonly debated moral issues. The courts have been questioning the ethics and morals of this issue for way too long. It is a never-ending debate that doesn't considers our right, or the victim's right, to freedom. It has drained the wallets of American taxpayers a lot and should be put to rest. "The vast majority of the population is in favor of euthanasia. However, our elected candidates don't represent their views" (Humphry). This takes away our right to freedom. Euthanasia is not a concern of moral ethics but a part of our freedom. The entire debate over this subject is pointless. "In October 1997, out of nearly 3,000 people who took part in a Sun newspaper telephone poll, an amazing 97 percent said terminally ill people should have the right to die with dignity" (TVES).
