Binge eating is probably the most common of the eating disorders and affects about 2% of adults in the United States. Binge eaters also tend to be older than those with anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa and nearly half of all binge eaters are men. Most people with binge eating disorders are obese, which is defined as being 20% or more above a person's normal body weight.

The cause of binge eating disorder is still unknown. Persons with this disorder are distressed by it, especially if they are trying to lose weight. About 50% of obese binge eaters are depressed or have a history of depression. Negative emotions such as anger, sadness, boredom, and anxiety can also trigger binge eating. People who are binge eat are usually over-nutritioned which contributes to obesity.
