The House On Mango Street is a book full of stories told by Esperanza Cordero who dreams with the house she will someday have, but not on Mango Street. While Esperanza is going through her childhood she is very sure what is her heritage, and therefore in part what is she.
There is not a simple theme in the book since Esperanza is growing up during the story the books has different themes. Themes in this book include hope, acceptance, sexist, friendship, and confusion. The theme of hope is made thanks to her desire for a better house, and although this could be confused as the main theme it is not quite the main even when sometimes that feeling of hope influences her actions. The theme of acceptance is about being accepted for others. When Esperanza becomes °best friends± with Lucy and Rachel she feels like if one of her dreams had finally come true. The main character of course is Esperanza Cordero who changes throughout the course of the novel. Thanks to that she can be seen as a dynamic character. She is a shy girl with low self-esteem who wants to be accepted. At the beginning she was not a so mature person but by the end of the novel the reader can see a change in this character. She becomes clearer about her identity and she gains awareness. When Esperanza understand that she was doing °wrong± for mimicking her sick aunt is showing maturity but at the same time is showing that she understand the concept of heaven and hell. When we are talking about this event we are talking about a progression since the beginning of the story. Although Esperanza was always saying that she was not happy with were she lived it was until the end of the novel in which she really started to think about her future and about her perfect house with purple petunias and bums in the attic. I would like to consider Sally as an unchangeable character, because she didn¯t change at all
