A brief Encounter With Destiny
She appeared behind the curtain suddenly and sat at the corner of my hospital bed. I had been crying and seeing Lady Philosophy made me cry even more because I knew she would tell me that after all this misery I have gone through, I would never find supreme happiness. Yet she was wrong, and somehow I needed to gather the strength to tell her. She needed to know the real truth in how we can attain happiness in this lifetime no matter what miseries we may have gone through. 'You weep and weep and although I do not know the reason for your sadness, Destiny, I know that talking about it we can somehow find consolation in your troublesome situation. Tell me of the burdens that make you so sad.' 'My two kids, and my husband and I were all asleep when it happened. My smallest child came screaming into our bedroom as the fire alarm went off. We all panicked and started running. Somehow the fire spread so fast from one side of the house to another. We were all in there too long, in the midst of tragedy we were holding on to each other trying to fight our way out of the flames. Although my husband and I managed to send the kids off first, it must have been too much for their small lungs. I then ra
'Lady Philosophy we can agree that God is perfect, and because of this perfection, He has supreme goodness, and perfect virtues. In previous arguments I have explained how it is that we can achieve these perfect virtues. In having and acting virtuously, we are not becoming God, but rather becoming like God. In your argument with Boethius you stated that we can become divine by participation. The only problem I found in your argument was that you thought it cannot happen in this lifetime because of our mortality. If we are practicing the virtues we have perfected, we are then participating in God's essence, and there is nothing stopping us. And since then we are like God who is the source of perfect happiness, then we too can be the source of our own perfect happiness. In this way it is not only God that can achieve this, and in saying this I again tell you that we can be happy in this lifetime.' 'Lady Philosophy it is through this misery that I have been able to find the truth. Which is another example of my argument. The goods of fortune, or evil, have helped me and given me hope so that I can live strongly and more virtuously. And I thank you because after this conversation with you, I am confident and truly have hope for the future, which if I reach genuine virtues, my future will be happiness.' 'Evil is a sidetrack as I told Boethius, which you cannot say are goods. Since there are these side-tracks, or evil in the world, it is then impossible to have a perfect good. It is impossible one can have the perfect good and evil at the same time, because they are complete opposites and cannot co-exist. So then tell me Destiny how is it that one can attain happiness even though there is evil in the world? (pg. 60)' 'Well, with Boethius we discussed that happiness is found through the possession of divinity. In talking with Boethius we discovered that supreme divinity and supreme goodness are the same. Since I already explained that God is the supreme goodness, he is also the only one who can achieve supreme divinity. Unless you can become God, which you cannot, there is no way to attain this happiness (pg. 71).' 'In trying to convince yourself that you will someday be happy, I think Destiny, that you have forgotten the definition of happiness that I once told Boethius. Supreme happiness is God. God created all things, showing that only He is self-sufficient. God is also the perfect good because he is good in his nature. Self-sufficiency and goodness are part of supreme happiness, so that only God can be perfect happiness. No matter what virtues you act upon, unfortunately Destiny you cannot
