Love in Les Miserables
Through his characters in the book Les Miserables Victor Hugo develops the idea that love is the most important and powerful force against the difficulties of life. The book Les Miserables takes place in post revolutionary France where there is still fighting for a government that will be fair to all of Frances people, not just the rich ones. Jean Valjean will be used as an example of how love conquers all because he never knew what love was until he met and took care of Cosette. Marius will be used because he too never knew real love, and was willing to throw away his life if he couldn't have his true love. Then lastly Eponine is an example because after all that she went through she found love, but when she realized she couldn't have it she was almost willing to kill for it.When Jean Valjean became a free man after 19 years in the galleys for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his starving brothers and sisters, and also numerous escape attempts, he finds himself in a small town called M---- sur M----. After their first kiss all they concentrated on was each other nothing around them. This proves that if two people love each other enough that in a passionate moment nothing else really matters. Soon after Marius and Cosette fell in love JVJ decided he wanted to move. So Cosette wanted Marius to come with them. But he didn't have any money, so he went to ask his grandfather if he could marry Cosette, but his grandfather wouldn't hear of that so Marius returned to Cosette's house without an answer. However the house was completely empty. So Marius sat down on the stairs and thought to himself, Eponine is also an example of Victor Hugo's theory that love can overcome everything even commonsense. She fell in love with Marius and then after she had been nice to him and put her heart on the line and realized he did not feel the same way about her she considered and almost did kill him and herself. One day while walking along she discovered Marius sitting on the street and recognized him. So she went over to him and started talking but he wasn't interested in what she had to say so to demonstrate that she cared she said After all of this Cosette fell in love with Marius. But soon they moved away from the Luxembourg so she never got to talk with him. But she couldn't tell JVJ because she didn't want to cause any trouble but on the inside it was killing her. Then on the other side of the coin JVJ felt bad because Cosette would not tell him what was wrong so he had no way of helping her. When Marius first saw Cosette he didn't think much of it. But after a few months of not seeing her, he saw her again and she had blossomed into a beautiful woman and right there he fell madly in love with her. However he could never get up enough courage to talk to her. But he would always go to the park where he first saw her to watch her. One day when he went to watch her he found a handkerchief that she dropped and said " He had no right to condemn Cosette to the cloister for the reason he had been condemned to the galleys."323
