Rice Admissions Essay

Last week a boy in my College Composition Two class made the following comment, "At the Senior Class President's third grade birthday party, we all rode horses at her house." The boy was talking about my third grade birthday party. He was trying to assure our teacher of how "country" I am. He was amused by the country nature, but I am proud of it and would not want it any other way.

A deep love for country life is what I can contribute to Rice University's residential college system. As a child growing up in the country, you explore and investigate nature around you. You welcome the open space and areas of exploration. The freedom to investigate allows children to expand their minds and imagine great possibilities. Living in the country allows for more personal privacy than city life can, because your closest neighbor may live a mile away, as opposed to a city neighbor who can hear if a fight is occurring in your house. One may view this privacy as lonesomeness, but I view it as a chance to grow closer to your family, thus, instilling deeper family values. Living in the country once you are home, you are normally home for the day, since driving into town maybe far away. Being home for the day with only your family, you end up growing closer. The privacy at home also permits you to appreciate the company of others when you see them-not because you are yearning for their company, but it is just a change of pace.
