In all of my travels northward I had never come across a more amazing experience than the time I encountered the great Geat king, Beowulf. It all started when Caesar Marcus Aurelius asked me to scout out the lands to the far north in an attempt to expand the empire. I departed northward along with three other men on an expedition that would soon bring us to great peril.
Partway into the expedition, one of my men was savagely eaten by a sea monster that had crept into the river we were crossing. Our spirits quickly dropped as it dawned on us that we would no longer have a navigator for this journey. We wandered aimlessly northward in search of the unknown. A month passed and we had not yet reached the northern sea where we had been searching. Finally, one week and four days later we spotted a large building amongst many smaller buildings in the distance. Our excitement rose as we approached this beautiful golden edifice. An inscription above the large doors
Beowulf was very dignified and yet very self-satisfied. He knew what he was there to do and that was to slay the evil Grendel to the ground. Although skepticism set in to a few of the Danes, his reputation surely preceded him. As we all retired for the night in Herot, Beowulf stayed alert waiting for the gruesome Grendel to show his snarling face. Indeed he did arrive late into the night when even I was sleeping soundly and could not hear. Grendel raced for some long-awaited meat to quench his frenzied hunger. Just as he went to nibble on one of the Danes, up arose Beowulf in a passionate rage. The noise awoke even the deepest sleeping man and caused great confusion to take over the mead hall. Beowulf took hold of the furious and hungry Grendel's arm and wrestled him to the ground. Unable to break free, Grendel ripped away from Beowulf, leaving his arm in Beowulf's grasp. Uproarious cheers swept the hall as Grendel rushed home mortally wounded.
