Work

A detailed Summary of Work

A normal day at work can be quite exhausting. As soon as we clock in something needs to be done. At least that is what my boss says even if everything looks ready to go. Most of the time the dishes have not been washed from the day shift. When I get to work, I usually have to wash them since the day workers were too lazy to finish their job. But that is just where all the fun to begins. A normal day of work at the Emerald Grille consists of preparation, cooking, and then cleaning before we can leave.

The first major thing we have to do is get everything prepared for the night shift. Sometimes this can be a real pain in the butt. The worst times are when the day shift workers do not finish what they are supposed to do. They usually leave all the dishes from lunch dirty and we have to wash them. Also, they never cut the steaks. This does not get done since they are so lazy. Cutting the steaks is one of the hardest preparation jobs. Since two different size steaks have to be cut, the person cutting them must be extra careful. For instance, if a small steak, which is eight ounces, gets cut too thin it will not weigh enough. The steak will be wasted. Sometimes if this does happen, one of the employees will cook the

steak for themselves. This is definitely good for the person who gets to eat it. If a big steak gets messed up, more of it is cut off and made into a small steak. Another chore we have to do is chop onions and tomatoes. Personally, I can not stand to chop onions. The smell of them makes my eyes water and then I can not see what I am doing. Chopping the tomatoes is not quite as bad. The only bad thing about cutting them is they make a mess. Every time I have to cut tomatoes, I end up with half the juice on my clothes. The last thing that is a necessity for the night shift is filling the make-table. The make-table is where we keep the toppings for the hamburgers. After chopping the onions and tomatoes, we fill part of the make table up with them. We also have to make sure the table is filled with lettuce, cheese, and peppers as well.

After all the preparation is finished, my boss tells us who is cooking where. There are actually five different cooking stations, but only three of them involve actual cooking. The people that do the cooking are the fryer, griddle man, and the grill man. The other two jobs that do not involve cooking are the front and the person in charge of the make-table. Even though it seems that they are not important, the front and the make-table are probably the hardest jobs of all. The fryer definitely has the dirtiest job. He has to mess around with flour and batter the whole time he is working. There is no way possible to stay clean if you
