The Hobbit
When people think of J.R.R. Tolkien, they might think of the multi-million dollar movie "The Lord of the Rings." But many others think of the prelude to The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit. A tale of far-off lands, goblins, elves, magic, dragons, and of course, treasure. The story begins with a description of our main character, Bilbo Baggins. Bilbo is a Hobbit who lives in his Hobbit-hole in The Hill, when he sees an old wizard named Gandalf walk pass his home. He recognizes him but has not seen the old wizard in some time. The old wizard explains to Bilbo why he has come to his home, he was trying to find a "recruit" to accompany him on an adventure. Bilbo became uncomfortable and explained to the wizard that "We are plain quiet folk and have no use for adventures. Nasty disturbing uncomfortable things!" he said. The Hobbit invites him back for tea the next day. Gandalf graciously accepts his offer and goes on his way . Bilbo knows little about Gandalf, but what he knows is certainly enough. He has heard stories about Gandalf's quest's for treasures in far-off places, and there have been many of them. But the hobbit is totally unprepared for what happens next. The next day Bilbo is waiting for the wizard
Bilbo happens to foil Gollums plans when he asks him what is in his pocket. He gave the monster 4 guesses, and he guessed all 4 incorrectly. Gollum began to chase Bilbo back up the path when Bilbo tripped, he put his hands in his pockets and the ring slipped on his finger. Gollum ran right passed the curled up Hobbit. It was an invisibility ring! The hobbit ran behind Gollum, hoping he would lead him to an exit, and that he did, but it was heavily guarded by goblins. The lucky hobbit managed to sneak passed the guards, and surprisingly found his companions waiting not far away from the exit. Gandalf explained to the group that they must hurry, for the goblins are afraid of the sun, but when night falls, they will send hundreds to find them. The group had been captured by elves not long after their escape from the giant spiders. It was thoroughly explained that elves liked nothing more than treasure, so they did not tell the Elven King about their treasure. Bilbo was the only one not captured, thanks to his invisibility ring. He pondered how to free the dwarfs from the elves. He came up with a brilliant plan using the elves secret cellar door, which lead into a river. They started toward their treasure but it is not very long before they encounter their first problem. It was raining, and cold, and the group realized that the wizard had disappeared. Bilbo saw a flickering light off in the distance, and the group told him to find out what it was, for Hobbits are fast moving through woods and are very quiet. The light turned to be a fire, with 3 trolls sitting around it. Bilbo didn't want to come back empty handed, so he tried to pick the pocket of one of the trolls. He noticed the little man, but didn't know what he was, the trolls got in an argument. The dwarfs ran to help the Hobbit but were trapped by the trolls, the Hobbit fought off the trolls and released the dwarfs, they found a splendid surprise of rare swords, food, and money in a cave nearby. They continued on their journey, tired, cold, and hungry. The main character of the story is a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins-what is a hobbit? J.R.R. Tolkien describes them as people, small people, about half the size of a common man. They live in Hobbit-holes in the Western Lands, far away from the dangers that lurk passed the Edge of the Wild. He lived in a neighborhood called The Hill, and enjoyed it very much. He sat outside his hole and blew smoke rings with his pipe.
