State of Sports
In the ever deteriorating state of sports, JRED will address major issues in the major sports enjoyed by Americans. Although some sports are doing well, most are doomed to suffer the failures of greed and power. Here is the state of each sport:-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NFL Football still seems to be in the best shape of all of the major sports. The NFL has the best revenue sharing plan that allows many teams to be successful. Parity is again the theme for today's NFL as there will be a new Super Bowl Champion for the fifth time in the past six seasons. The NFL has the highest attendance and television ratings figures of all sports. Unfortunately, detractors will say that the overall quality of the league has slipped with the salary cap issue. Elite teams of today would not compete with some of the all-time teams in the past 20-30 years, but the league is thriving and fans in any city are able to dream about the Super Bowl turnaround made by the 1999 St. Louis Rams. The NCAA, to the chagrin of many universities and fans, refuses to use a playoff system for D1A football. The 2000 season proved that the flawed BC
There is a solution to the NCAA's problems, however. A playoff system can resolve all issues and has been used for years on other levels of college football. Many fear that the playoff system will hurt the revenues of the current bowl system. This does not have to be. The BCS, with an overhaul, can take the top eight teams and set up a playoff system to be played at the top bowl sites each year. Only two teams will play a maximum of three games so they can be held during winter break with the final game being played on New Year's day. Other bowls can still remain for teams that did not qualify for the tournament. The semifinals and finals can be held at the top three bowl sites on a rotational basis, while the first round will be played at the top four teams' home stadiums. This will reward these universities and their fans with home field advantage. There are currently only four BCS bowls anyway so a 'best of the rest' bowl could pit the two best teams who did not make the tournament against each other to round out the fourth major game. There will be no lost revenue and a tournament can start much sooner to revive interest in the postseason and eliminate a lot of the downtime between the regular season and the bowl games. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OUTLOOK: Hockey remains in serious trouble as no sport has turned their back on their fans more. Look for hockey to lose more popularity, but the recent comeback of Mario Lemieux will provide a shot in the arm for the dying sport. Despite being a little more fan, the NHL will still continue to watch many fans stay away. With the overall escalation of costs for sports entertainment, many fans are forced to make a choice, and hockey is getting the shaft.
