She Found Out

She ran, her guitar kicking at the back of her legs. "A hit" she thought excitedly. "I know it's a hit." Luanne opened the wood screen door and ran inside. The door pounded shut with a series of bangs, each one softer than the last.

"Dave?" She tripped over Mr. Whiskers, her cat, and fell forward onto the floor; the guitar serenading her with an unmelodic accompaniment. "For God's sake Mr. Whiskers! You know I can't see you in the dark." She pulled the guitar from her back and checked for any signs of damage. None were visible. She patted the black cat between its ears. "Dave!" Her voice bounced off the walls, echoing the fact that she was alone.

"Okay Mr. Whiskers, you wanna listen?'' She picked her guitar up from the floor and sat down on the couch. The cat jumped up next to her and rubbed its head on the underside of her arm, purring in a loud baritone cat voice. "How 'bout you?" She yelled to her dog, Alec.

She pulled the leather strap over her shoulder, snugged her guitar into place under her chest and plucked at the strings successively to retune. Dave had bought the Fender for her last year, after she won the Bow Ridge Talent Search. "Baby, one day you'll be a big ol' star." He said when he handed it

No, I can't look away and live that kind of life.

"Dave! Oh God, Dave!" She ran to him, throwing the gun on the floor. "Dave you rotten son of a bitch!" she cried. It was bad enough he cheated on her, now he had to go and get himself shot. She didn't even get a chance to tell him about her great news. Oh, no...she thought...this is going to wreck everything. "Oh, I gotta think. What can I do?" She sat on the edge of her bed. Mr. Whiskers jumped up to her lap. He meowed softly.

She walked to the side table next to the bed and dialed. "Hello, Jimmy? Alexis. I need you to come over right away." Alexis looked over at Dave's dead body. "No, there's just something I need you to take care of....yeah, thanks brother....oh and bring a shovel."

"Mr. Whiskers...I killed daddy." She patted the cat absently. "Daddy never liked you anyway, did he? He's gone and wrecked everything on me. Think...." She closed her eyes, then opened them again. The gun lay accusingly on the floor next to Dave's body. She'd go to jail for sure. Even if it were an accident, she'd go to jail. She could just kiss her life goodbye. Things like that always happened to Alexis. Like the time her daddy brought her home a cat; died the next day. She always ended up almost getting something. The gun held an option of its own. She could turn it on herself like she had planned to do in the first place. She thought for a moment, then selfishly threw that idea away. "No, I'm gonna be a big ol' star Dave, and you can't stop me now."

I know it's over and we're through.

Pushing the door open, doorknob hitting the wall, Dave entered.
