Cinderella

When considering the fairy tale "Cinderella" and the film Pretty Woman, one can conclude the main theme of the two is taking life by the horns and doing whatever is necessary in order to succeed. Both girls are considerably motivated individuals who go beyond the norm to get themselves out of unfortunate dilemmas. It should also be noted that neither girl complains about their lives. They just accept the situation they are in and do their best to better themselves. Luck is certainly on their side; however it is their genuine personalities that really lead them out of their holes. They possess a certain indescribable trait that allows the viewer to easily fall in love with them. Because they are young ordinary girls who are presented with a rough path, viewers can easily relate to them. It is easy for the viewer to compare the lives they lead to that of the characters. In many ways, the movie Pretty Woman parallels to that of Cinderella. "Allegedly planned as a grim, downbeat drama until director Gary Marshall came onto the scene, the movie was transformed in all senses of the word into a classic fairy tale, a la "Cinderella" (Putman 2). However it's not the similarities and differences between the two that matter, rather the principle content that counts. Like Cinderella, Pretty Woman has been dealt an unfortunate hand in her life. Julia Roberts plays the character of Vivian, who is a young prostitute trying to earn money to make ends meat. "She is a woman who is as smart as she is attractive, which makes her very smart" (Ebert 2). She too, miraculously meets her Prince Charming, who also happened to be a customer.
