Code-Mixing

Hong Kong SAR was a British colony in the past but this tiny city has become a part of China since 1997. The blending of Western and Eastern Culture is reflected by Code-mixing language style which is a colorful feature of individuals and bilingual societies in Hong Kong. This language style phenomenon is very unique that makes our group have an In-Depth Investigation on the interesting topic, which is the cultural identity and language choice in Hong Kong.

In this paper, we would find out what is Code-mixing first and then analyze why people are always Code-Mixing? There are many reasons and motives behind this question, but Mass Media will be our focus while constructing answers. At last, we would find out its influences.

According to John Gibbon , a code refers to a language or a variety or style of a language. Code-Mixing refers to the use of one or more languages for consistent transfer of linguistic units from one language into another, and by such a language mixture develops a new restricted or non-restricted code of linguistic interaction. Code-mixing can occur in either spoken or written text, for example: ¥SÚ¦Óca¥h Library°Õ'(Utterance), ¥°t¦X¦U models ªº¤L¦PºtAÀ' (Written form


English is widely used in public by most educated persons under Britain's rule before 1997 in public sector, such as most government officials and lawyers speak in English in legislation council or court. In private sector, English is still regard as the primary ¥language of business' and becomes more important, like many contracts and constitutional documents are still written in English. Even in some informal conversations or social contact of these professionals, government officials and businessman, they are Code-Mixing through English interfaces with Cantonese.

The freedom of press has been put to the discussion in recent years. Does the mass media use code mixing freely without any guidelines? Of course, again, different types of media have different level of bottom line. Nevertheless, after interviewing the professionals, our group has figured out some common guidelines that are shared by several types of mass media for choosing code mixing as the media of presentation.
