According to the TRACFBI website accessed on May 22, 2002, http://trac.syr.edu/tracfbi/findings/aboutFBI/fbiResponsibilities.hyml it is the mission statement of the Federal Bureau of Investigation to uphold the law through the investigation of violations of federal criminal law; to protect the U.S. from foreign intelligence and terrorist activities; to provide leadership and law enforcement assistance to federal, state, local, and international agencies; and to perform these responsibilities in a manner that is responsive to the needs of the public and is faithful to the constitution of the U.S. The agency now known as the Federal Bureau of Investigation was founded in 1908 by President Theodore Roosevelt (referred to as TR on the history of the FBI web page) when he appointed a force of Special Agents to be the Bureau of investigative force of the United States Department of Justice (DOJ). Apparently before that time, the DOJ had to borrow Agents from the U.S. Secret Service to investigate violations of federal criminal laws within its jurisdiction. I am a little surprised to hear that the FBI claims that it does not discriminate against an applicant that might have used drugs in the past. Of course, the catch twenty-two is obviously the fact that a person who might have experimented with drugs in past will most likely be under a lot closer scrutiny then one who has not. However, I tend to agree with the bureau's policy due to the fact that there probably are a good number of potential candidates that would otherwise be discriminated against for a mistake that they might have made when they were young. The programs cover most everything that the FBI investigates, and some individual cases in a program often receives extensive investigative attention because of their size, potential impact, or sensitivity. 4. The website basically says about the same thing that we discussed during class which is the fact that law enforcement agencies require applicants to pass a polygraph test before they are subjected to a thorough background investigation or are given an appointment to the Academy. 1.
