Technical Paper: buying 1967 GTO

A detailed Summary of Technical Paper: buying 1967 GTO

There is a lot to think about when the time comes to buy a car. You need to know what kind of vehicle you're getting, how reliable it is, the mileage and the safety equipment it'll have makes a big difference also. When first starting out, you need to know the costs for general maintenance your vehicle will need, and the price of insurance that you will have to pay. Even the gas mileage makes a difference for a person who wants to spend their money on better things, than always filling the tank. People want to get good deals on the vehicles that they buy, and so doing a little research to make your dollar count is usually recommended. I am going to research a 1967 Pontiac GTO in generally fair condition that a man is trying to sell for $4500. As a first-time buyer, I will check out some of the optional equipment, mileage and the reliability of the car; while checking up on other cars around the same condition that are for sale, as well as explore the safety equipment that the cars had. I will figure the costs of maintaining the car, keeping it in good running condition, and the average amount I'd pay for gas each time I filled the tank. Also, Insurance is also something I will have to look into as I am

So the maintenance costs are here already. The cost of 4 new Redline tires that came originally on GTOs are $139.95 a piece ordered from The Paddock catalog. The total is $604.75 for the tires plus shipping and handling from ordering from a catalog, and to have the tires put on would be another $100. The changing of the timing chain cost about $125 in total and that would be just the start for maintenance. For one year the oil should be changed around four times, which would cost about $20 each time, that's $80. Getting a lube job twice a year would end up costing around $50. So I would be pretty well off saying that I'd pay at least $175.00 a year for maintenance, keeping all the fluids up and replacing windshield wipers when needed. The cost of gas would be about $32.00 to fill the tank when it would be on empty, if gas was $1.49 a gallon with a 21.5 gallon gas tank. I would get approximately 10 miles per gallon, and so I'd probably get 215 miles per tank of gas. The usual person puts 12,000 miles on a car a year, thus around 250 a week. Comparing to my parents I would probably drive around 200-215 miles a week driving to school, work, and to a friend's house occasionally. I wouldn't put that much driving into my car and so I think one tank of gas a week would work well. Thirty-five dollars a week for gas (rounding for unfixed gas prices or more miles traveled) would work out as $1,820.00 spent for gas each year. This about sums up the cost for keeping the car going, all that's left is auto-insurance.

The reliability of this vehicle is hard to judge. Mechanics say that if the car is well kept, and the owner is on top of everything, then age shouldn't matter on the reliability. But since I do not know what may need replacing, then a tune-up check-up is my best bet. Having a mechanic look at everything is a good idea, to know the condition of the engine, transmission, steering, wheels, fuel and exhaust. These things are important to stay on top of, when brakes go out, it can be very dangerous. The mechanic at High Desert Tire Factory in Redmond, OR looked at the GTO I want to purchase. He said that it would be pretty reliable for the next year or two but that I would probably want to get a new timing chain since the one on the car currently, is old. Also new tires were suggested, (not only because he worked at the tire factory), because they did look a little shabby.
