A Critical Review

The Korean War held many interesting and important aspects for global politics as well as military ones for the United States. This new beast was borne from mutual fear and arrogance that we have come to know as limited war. In Chapter 16 Weigley discusses the now seemingly predictable and non-eventful set of factors which were at the time of the Korean War a load of questions for both Americans, and communists alike. The Korean War first began with North Korea's invasion of the southern, American controlled country. This invasion was not done without the permission of Josef Stalin. North Korean leader, Kim Il Sung lobbied Stalin to allow him to invade, and after Stalin felt that the U.S. would not become involved he okayed the operation. Stalin was eager to test the United States, who had earlier failed to intervene in China's revolution, and wanted to see if an invasion of the Balkan states would be met with opposition.
