Africa

At the end of the year 2000, UNAIDS and the World Health Organization (WHO) have estimated that 36.1 million people were living with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) or Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). AIDS, caused by HIV, is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) that attacks the immune system and takes about five to ten years before killing its victim. Treatments for AIDS are drug cocktails, but they only slow the disease down. Drug cocktails have to be taken for the rest of your life and can cost an individual up to US$10,000 per year. AIDS was discovered in 1983, and has appeared to originate from chimpanzees. AIDS has existed for thousands of years in animals, it entered large human populations in the 1970s, and it seems that HIV/AIDS is not going away anytime soon.

Botswana is estimated to have the highest rate of HIV infection in the world. This country is pa

Some 35.8 percent of adults are infected with HIV in Botswana and the rate has more than tripled since 1992. One in eight infants are infected at birth. For a 15-year-old boy living in Botswana, there is about an 85 percent chance of dying from AIDS in his lifetime. There are 12 women living with AIDS for every 10 infected men, and women in their early twenties are more likely to become infected than men. The money that the government was going to use from its diamond revenues to end poverty and develop the rural areas is gone. The money now has to be used on hospitals and medicines. 70 percent of hospital beds hold AIDS patients. The public health spending of AIDS exceeds two percent of the gross domestic product. AIDS is making Botswana sink in a povert
