MacBeth
The three primary states to human existence and well being are; emotional, mental, and physical. In Shakespeare's play, Macbeth, these qualities are used to allow the reader to discover the characters strengths and weaknesses. Based on these three states, the main character of Macbeth can be categorized as the strongest character in the play. The character of Macbeth is first introduced to the reader as a strong and brave character. His physical strength is revealed during the camp scene in Act 1, Scene 2. King Duncan learns of a battle which Macbeth fought bravely, defeating the enemy.King Duncan is impressed by Macbeth's bravery. "O valiant cousin! Worthy gentleman!" (1.2.24) Macbeth's bravery on the battlefield is discussed at length by the captain who witnessed the battle. He describes Macbeth as a loyal warrior who did not stop until he killed the enemy of the king. " Till he unseamed him from the nave to th' chops, And fixed his head upon our battlements."(1.2.22-23). His physical strength is also revealed during various fights throughout the play. At the end of the play, Macbeth still doesn't show fear in any physical situation. Macduff's army has made an attempt on his castle and even though his is
outnumbered and out-manned, he does not retreat or run away. He stays and fights to the bitter end. He kills the young siward and continues to defend his castle. After this fight he continues on, he does not retreat to his castle as suggested by one of his siwards. " Why should I play the Roman fool, and die on mine own sword? Whiles I see lives, the gashes do better upon them.( 5.8 1-3). Macbeth is explaining that as long as he sees the enemies men still alive on his grounds, he will continue fighting. Macbeth is a very brave character. Macbeth's mental state of well being adds to his strong character. Macbeth does depend of the prophecies of the three witches but this was a strong belief during this time. He strongly believes in spirits, curse, fate, and prophecies. Macbeth does become an evil character as he cruelly carries out his plan and his belief in his destiny. The murders cause his wife to become insane and leads to her death but he is able to continue on even after hearing this news.
