There are many animals that are threatened. One that is threatened in the Northwest is the lynx. The lynx are animals that are more dependent on another animal for their survival than many other animals out there. The life of lynx depend on snowshoe hares, their main food source. We do not know much about the lynx populations throughout the nation, we can only estimate, but it is low and in danger. Logging, development, snowmobile trails and roads that allow packed-snow access to the high country by the lynx's predators also affect the lynx population. The lynx is a member of the cat family. They are medium sized animals, similar to bobcats. They appear larger than they actually are because of their long legs and long, thick fur. One thing that is distinct about lynx is their large furry feet. They use them to travel through deep snow. Their fur is a gray-brown mixture with paler gray or brown on the belly, legs, and feet. In late spring, their color darkens to a reddish brown. They are good climbers but hunt on the ground for snowshoe hares.
