The Teaching of English in Alto

A detailed Summary of The Teaching of English in Alto

Language, in the world, is the essential means of communication, both for intellectual and for social messages. It is also an extremely complex and challenging system of rules and principles, which nevertheless children and young people acquire with apparent ease with great rapidity. The learning of any language, its nature, function and development, can provide insight into human modes of thought and social interaction.

Based on what I have stated above, I consider that, within this modern world, the learning of English plays an important role in the development as well as in the improvement of the students' educational training. In this regard, it is highly important to think over the way we can help out to its enhancement and growth.

The following study is concerned with the teaching of English in Private schools of El Alto, and the main purpose is to present a general illustration about the level of effectiveness students of the 4th secondary level attain in the English language learning.

Founded on my own experience, I consider worth saying that through the time I have been teaching English, I have noticed the deficient outcomes that a great number of students have been obtaining year after year.

After having questioned myself I decided to conduct a previous survey (March, 2001) in three private schools of El Alto. I got surprised and upset with the results it released. A great deal of students considered the teaching of English a waste of time. The response illustrated clearly that there might be various reasons why most of the students revealed such negative attitude towards the language.

The second element is the Time. It is clearly evident that the time assigned is not enough to accomplish the activities planned. Teachers have only two periods (35-45 minutes each) per week.

Let us mention the first, the Teacher. In a greater part of schools both, public and private, there is absence of qualified teachers. Therefore the English subject is in charge of temporary or improvised teachers.

Additionally, it could be noticed that many teachers do not master the language as they should, therefore we can state that if conditions remain the same way, let us say poor responsiveness from the students, repeated teaching of the same basic level of English and hence limited opportunities to practice the language in more complex areas of the language teachers are probably going to lose gradually their abilities on the target language.

The survey was also valuable to perceive that lots of students are aware of the limited knowledge they acquire and hint that during the time they were expected to learn the language, they have simply been repeating the same grammar items or structures year after year without developing a real understanding of the English language.

As a final point, we may say that even though
