In "Hills Like White Elephants" the author begins with a description of the place where the story develops; a rural town in Spain, where the two main characters, a man and a girl, are seated at a restaurant drinking beer as they wait for a train. While seated in the table the girl notices distant hills on the other side of the town, and instantly says that they look like White Elephants. The man's unimpressed response along with the girl's reaction triggered a tension between the parties that eventually would lead to one very delicate topic.

The tension between them kept rising while they were drinking, which lead to the ordering of a few more beers, and eventually on the third drink, the man raises the subject of an operation he's encouraging the girl to have. As the conversation developed it became apparent that they were talking about an abortion. Offering his unconditional support and friendship to the girl, the man encouraged the girl to go ahea


d and do the operation as planned. She would ensure him that they'd go on as before accorded.

Finally, this story deftly and painfully captures the difficulty of talking about, or rather around, abortion. The fact that neither person specifies what this "operation" is called aggravates their communication problem, as does the man's odd comments about the procedure "letting the air in". The problems confronted by this couple, at the time somewhat unusual since abortion was considered illegal, are everyday discussion in today's world, this story illustrates how times change and our society must change along with it.

All these conflicts between them can surely guarantee a break up. Since they don't seem to agree on anything and it's certain that the man has control over everything I think the girl will end up breaking up with this individual. Their relationship has been changed by his attempts to manipulate her and they will never "get it back". His actions have made their futur
