The Life of Miss Emily Grierson

The life of Miss Emily Grierson: A characterization of Miss Emily Grierson in William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily"

Miss Emily Grierson better known as Miss Emily, born an only child. Her father is rich and overprotective. They live in a small town name Jefferson. There's no mother or any female living in the house. Miss Emily has no friends, unless her father would choose them. Miss Emily has a childhood with no happiness. She grows up to believe that she is better than others because she has money.

Miss Emily has been living alone since her father's death. During her father's life he has always taken care of household matters. Now that he's gone, all responsibilities belong to Miss Emily. Miss Emily receives a notice of taxes that means nothing to her because she knew her father has lent the town money and for that reason, they pay no taxes. The Board of Aldermen visits Miss Emily to discuss the taxes, but Miss Emily replies "See Colonel Sartoris. I have no taxes in Jefferson." (30) T

he problem is Colonel Sartoris has been dead for almost ten years. At the time of Miss Emily's father death, news starts to circulate the house is the only thing Miss Emily own. Women of the town offer their condolence and aid. Miss Emily answers the door as if nothing has happen. Miss Emily states that her father is not dead. For three days, she denies her father's death. The ministers and doctors persuade Miss Emily to let them dispose of the body. Miss Emily breaks down, as they take the body and bury her father quickly. She cannot deal with the fact of being alone.

People in the town, began to remember "how old lady Wyatt, her great-aunt, gone completely crazy at last, believing that the Griersons held themselves a little too high for what they really were. None of the young men were quite good enough for Miss Emily and such." (30-31) Miss Emily has been sick for long time, and no one has seen her for a long time. When she was seen again, she looks different, like a little girl.
