Gia Marie Carangi

When looking back on all the photos and runways I've seen of Gia Marie Carangi, I never would have suspected her life to have been so out of control and overwhelming. Gia's life didn't last long enough; but for the time she was alive, Gia experienced a lot and broke boundaries that were never thought of being broken. Gia Marie Carangi gave a new meaning to the modeling industry catch phrase "girl of the moment"; Gia's life was amazing and touching to everyone that knew her name.

Gia's childhood was intense and dramatic. Her life experiences, beginning at a young age, were abnormal. She had a yearning for "something" while growing up. Gia Carangi grew up in Levittown, in Northeast Philadelphia, in the 1970's. She lived with her mother, father, and two older brothers. When Gia was six years old a neighborhood boy sexually abused her, but she would not speak of the abuse until she was older. When Gia was 11 years old, her parents separated. Gia's mother left the family and moved out on her own. Gia was depressed by her mother's departure and there were no other women around as a role model. When Gia was around 14, she became a wild teenager. There was a new rock band called "Bowie", which Gia and her fri

I was so shocked. Gia had put on some weight and she just looked out of it. She was smoking a cigarette and it was burned down to the filter; she was still holding it and the ashes were dangling. I took the butt from between her fingers, because she was going to burn herself. Gia was even selling her belongings to buy drugs. (Fried 265)

Gia was great at modeling; everyone was fascinated with her look. It was so unique and dark, sort of mysterious. Gia was different, easygoing; she wasn't shy about her body. She was crazy and would dance around nude. She was comfortable with the way she was. Gia was exotic and could be anything you wanted her to be. (Fried 114). Gia met her true love on one of her modeling jobs. She fell for her, a top makeup artist, by the name of Sharon Beverly. Sharon has never been interested in women until Gia came along. They had a twisted affair that lasted quite a while. They were in love, truly and deeply in love. Although Gia was quite busy and constantly with people, she was extremely lonely. She made a hugh chunk of money. "Gia made more than one hundred thousand dollars a year during her first two full years of modeling". ("Simply Gia"). She was a needy person and always wanted company. She got depressed very easily. Gia had become bored with her modeling career, and was searching for something else. The work seemed very empty but far too financially rewarding to give up. However, Gia was alone in New York; what little emotional support she had was shaky. She and Sharon had their "last fight" some time ago. (Fried 187).

In 1980, Gia's second mother, Wilhelmina Cooper, passed away. This was the start of destruction for Gia. In 1981 Gia had been arrested, she was caught driving under the influence of a narcotic. Gias life was going downhill and had almost hit the bottom. In May of '81, Gia had to get surgery on her hand. "She injected herself in the same place so many times that there was an open, infected tunnel leading into her vein". ("Simply Gia").

"Life and death, energy and peace. If I stop today, it was fun, even the terrible pains that have burned me, and scarred my soul. It was worth it for having been allowed to walk where I walked, which is hell on earth, heaven on earth. Back again, into, under, far in between. Through it, in it, and above it." - Gia Carangi, 1986. ("Gia in the Flesh")

Gia was a fresh new face for most modeling companies. Once she started taking pictures, everyone wanted her.
