Assessment Title: 'History of Globe Theatre'Shakespeare's theatre was known as the "Globe Theatre". Many of his plays were shown there. Although the theatre was in a position known for lack of gentleness, Shakespeare's stories and plays still attracted many kinds people. It was made in 1598 and opened on 1599, using a picture of Hercules holding up a globe (When Hercules replaced Atlas temporarily for holding the Earth up), to advertise the play "Julius Caesar". Using Hercules holding up a globe as the theatre's crest, the motto was "Totus mundus agit histrionem", or "The whole world is a playhouse/stage", a phrase used in the play "As You Like It". With good successes, Shakespeare went in semi-retirement at the age of 49, where he went to Stratford. Around this time, on 29th June 1613, the theatre was burnt to the ground. The cause of this was the firing of a cannon during the performance of "Henry VIII", where the flammable thatched roof caught on fire. This was the end of the first theatre. The theatre was then rebuilt two years before Shakespeare's death, in 1614. This time with a tile roof, it lasted twice as long than the first. 26 years after Shakespeare's death in 1616, there was a new power in England, which was anti-theatre, closing all theatres in the country, including the Globe Theatre. In another two years (1644), the Globe was levelled to the ground with the foundations buried and tenement housing was built over it. This was the end of the second Globe theatre.
