Bestiality shows the primal instincts of the soldiers and how they are brought out in a most destructive way by the war. The war can be compared to a disease in that it does through the men fast and mercilessly, leaving none unharmed. The war destroys everything, the land, and the soldiers, both mentally and physically, and this is why the book All Quiet On The Western Front shows the theme of despair.

Erich Maria Remarque is a fantastic writer of this touching story. Some of his sayings are quite confusing, so this book is not for the younger audience. Despite this, the overall story is good, and keeps you interested. This story will bring out the realness of war, that it isn't just a gloryfest, but just struggling to stay alive. The book combines together humor, action, and drama all in one story.

This story's real strength lies somewhere else, though. This is in the portrayal of the characters' thoughts and feelings. Each character reacts to situations so realistically that many times I found myself thinking: "That's what I would have done!" This blends well with Remarque's many ventures into human nature throughout the book. He uses his characters to go into the depths of all of our souls, and he does it with skill. Especially well done was the part where Paul gets some leave of his duties and he goes back home to his family
