During the course of reading the book All Quiet on the Western Front, I became somewhat confused. The author seems to go back and forth between trying to show the full implications of our first world war and delving into the deeper reaches of human nature. However, by the end of the story I realized what a masterful author Erich Maria Remarque is in that he is able to seamlessly weave together these two daunting topics.

The story centers around a young soldier named Paul in some unnamed regiment in the German army. They fight the Allied forces of the United States of America and Europe, plus their friends. The story is about how Paul and the other soldiers with him, who are also his closest friends, deal with the many aspects of the war. They do this in the only way that they know how, and they are not always successful. Remarque deals with the characters' fears and thoughts by mixing them together into the story.

Although the author does not offer great detail on any one character, you still find yourself caring and hoping for each of them as they fight, love, hate, and in many cases, die. The despair in this book destroys the soldier's lives, in one way or another. They are affected in such a way that they cannot ever be cured; their lives are never the same. The decay deteriorates the mental and physical condition of the soldiers, and death is useless shows how much the suffering and death of the men goes against reason and logic. Bestiality shows the primal instincts of the soldiers and how they are brought out in a most destructive way by the war. The war can be compared to a disease in that it does through the men fast and mercilessly, leaving none unharmed. The war destroys everything, the land, and the soldiers, both mentally and physically, and this is why the book All Quiet On The Western Front shows the theme of despair.

Erich Maria Remarque is a fantastic writer of this touching story. Some of his sayings are quite confusing, so this book is not for the younger audience. Despite this, the overall story is good, and keeps you interested. This story will bring out the realness of war, that it isn't just a gloryfest, but just struggling to stay alive. The book combines together humor, action, and drama all in one story.

This story's real strength lies somewhere else, though. This is in the portrayal of the characters' thoughts and feelings. Each character reacts to situations so realistically that many times I found myself thinking: "That's what I would have done!" This blends well with Remarque's many ventures into human nature throughout the book. He uses his characters to go into the depths of all of our souls, and he does it with skill. Especially well done was the part where Paul gets some leave of his duties and he goes back home to his family
