As Odysseus tries to go home he is seen changing from an arrogant young man who carelessly travels with a group of renegades to a more tempered and wiser person who desires, more than anything, to go home. The early Odysseus was as reckless and careless with his words as he was in his actions. After making himself comfortable in Polyphemus' cave (and eating his food) and then narrowly escaping, he shouted his real name - adding insult to injury - to the Cyclops, which almost resulted in getting everyone killed. Odysseus then incurred the wrath of Poseidon (Polyphemus' father) for the rest of his journey, after Polyphemus prayed to him, asking for revenge.

The gradual disappearance of Odysseus ships and men help to contrast an early Odysseus who is brave but obviously not a good leader. Interestingly, the renegade men never return home with Odysseus, but Odysseus himself is transformed into a brave hero who's only wish is that he wants desperately to make it home. Even his voyage home is a battle against all odds, one in which he will not be detained any longer, and the brave Odysseus finally makes his way home. When he finally does make it home, Odysseus, with the help of a few faithful, regains control of his house and in so doing is transformed into a leader and king.
