Beads of sweat have already begun to trickle down the top of my forehead and the judge has not even announced the beginning of the fight. The crowd cheers for the one they feel soon to be the victor. However all is mute around me, my focus solely on the opponent in front of me. The bow down has commenced, I now go to fighting stance, a rattle snake coiled and ready to attack. "Begin!" The affirmation for the fight has begun, no backing down now.

I remain in fighting stance, anticipating the middle-weight contender three feet away from me. Unfortunately, so does he. Three seconds pass, an eternity in the 30 second rounds of competitive Tae Kwon Do. He makes the first move, a round-house kick to my side. Two years of training has burned the reflex into me. I take a quick step forward, place my foot firmly on the mat, pivot, and do a back kick to his chest. One point for me.

The battle does not stop here. Merely seven seconds have passed, the


fighting has just begun. I switch my stance in preparation for my next move. With an abrupt sidestep a lift my front leg, knee waist level, and propel my foot forward a hit to his side. One more point for me.

Three seconds to go, a tie would result in one more round. I must win, failure is not an option. I calculate my opponent's next move, as he does mine. With a firm step forward, my foot is placed to provide structure for the rest of me. My right leg flies in the air, the foot outlining a crescent moon. The move is risky for I am left vulnerable if I do not hit. The outside-crescent kick catches my contender off guard. With just enough time to open his eyelids in bewilderment, my foot strikes the side of his head. He falls down, temporally limp from pain. I get one point, the bell chimes, and I win.
